Will Ukraine win Eurovision 2022? Why it is favourite to win and who the entry Kalush Orchestra is

Ukraine are performing against the odds in the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest – despite the fact that men of fighting age are currently not allowed to leave the country.

Ukraine will be attending the competition against the odds, which will make for emotional viewing – and bookies believe – generous voting.

But who have Ukraine put forward as a representative and what do the experts have to say on the matter?

Who is Ukraine’s Eurovision entry?

Ukraine have entered the band Kalush Orchestra to represent them at Eurovision.

Kalush Orchestra is an eclectic band – made up of rapper Oleh Psiuk, multi-instrumentalist Ihor Didenchuk, dancer Vlad Kurochka, sopilka player Vitalii Duzhyk, and vocalists Tymofii Muzychuk and Oleksandr Slobodianyk.

They combine traditional Ukrainian folk music with modern rap and hip hop, creating a unique sound.

Will Ukraine win Eurovision?

Bookies currently have Ukraine tipped to win the Eurovision final for 2022.

According to Betfair, Ukraine are the odds-on favourite to win at 8/15, followed by last years’ winner Italy at 9/2.

William Lee Adams, founder of the largest Eurovision fansite told i that Ukraine’s band would be unlikely winners in other times.

Adams said their “Beastie Boys meets Ukrainian folk rap” entry wouldn’t normally be in contention for the trophy but admitted the war “could push things in their favour” – at least in the public vote.

What is the UK entry?

Sam Ryder will be representing the UK at Eurovision 2022 with his song “Space Man”.

The British singer-songwriter started his music career in 2009, but only rose to prominence in 2021 after he became well known for sharing clips of himself singing on Tik Tok.

Sam told Gazette News: “Now that I’ve been in the Eurovision hurricane for a few weeks, it is true what they say: there is no experience like Eurovision.

“It’s bonkers. It’s incredible and beautiful.”

He added: “I’ve been invited to share the stage with amazing performers from all over Europe, celebrating music and songwriting.

“They are the facts that I can hold on to and put my positive energy and focus into.”
