Who stars in Netflix’s LGBTQ+ love story with Joe Locke and Kit Connor and UK release date



New Netflix Drama Heartstopper follows the lives of two teenage boys who meet at school and fall in love.

Charlie, Nick and their circle of friends must navigate their journey of self discovery and acceptance, supporting each other as they learn to find themselves selves.

The series is based on a 27-year-old Alice Oseman’s graphic novel series, which has sold one million print copies since its publication.

The cast is largely made up of first-time actors. Here’s what you need to know.

Who stars in Heartstopper?

Joe Locke – Charlie Spring

First-time actor Joe Locke plays the show’s protagonist, Charlie Spring, a gay teenager with a group of outcast friends.

Kit Connor – Nick Nelson

Kit Connor plays Nick Nelson, the rugby team’s star player, who is struggling to identify his sexuality. One of the more experienced actors, Connor has appeared in the BBC’s War and Peace and as a young Elton John in Rocketman.

Olivia Colman – Sarah Nelson

The Oscar-winning actress’ role was kept secret right up until the show’s launch today. Alice Oseman said she “couldn’t believe” Colman, 48, agreed to play Nick’s mum in the series.

William Gao – Tao Xu

Tao is one of Charlie’s best friends, who is initially sceptical when he begins spending time with Nick. It is his screen debut.

Yasmin Finney – Elle Argent

Elle is another close friend to Charlie and Tao, who is transgender. It is also her screen debut, though last year it was announced that she would appear in the directorial feature debut from POSE star Billy Porter.

Corinna Brown – Tara Jones

Tara is a student at at the same school and Elle. It is Corinna’s biggest role to date. She made her on-screen debut as Nashauna in My Murder, which starred a young John Boyega.

Sebastian Croft – Ben Hope

Ben is one of Charlie’s classmates, with whom he has a fractious relationship. He appeared previously in Game of Thrones, playing a young Ned Stark. 

Kizzy Edgell – Darcy Olsson

Darcy is also a student at Higgs, alongside Tara and Elle. Kizzy Edgell, who is non-binary, is making their on-screen debut.

Jenny Walser – Tori Spring

Tori Spring is Charlie’s older sister. Heartstopper is Jenny Walser’s biggest project to date, though she previously appearing a 2021 episode of Call The Midwife.

Fisayo Akinade – Mr Ajayi

Mr Ajayi Charlie’s art teacher and also a member of the LGBTQ+ community. Fisayo Akinade has previously appeared in The Personal History of David Copperfield, Silent Witness and The Girl with All the Gifts.

UK release date

All eight episodes of Heartstopper are available to stream on Netflix from today (Friday 22 April).
