Which NatWest branches are closing? How to find your nearest bank and what to do if yours is set to close

NatWest and Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) have confirmed that they are permanently closing 32 high street branches in the UK

Although the bank did not make an official announcement, they said the stores are closing due to customers using online and mobile banking services more.

The bank company has not given the closure dates but customers should be given at least 12 weeks’ notice. The sites across England and Wales will be shut this year.

The decision comes amid a shift in the industry as online services become more popular.

Hundreds of sites, including Lloyds and Halifax, shut last year and experts have predicted as many as 800 could disappear from UK high streets in 2022.

Santander shut 111 sites before last summer and TSB said in November that it would axe as many as 70 branches.

A spokesperson for NatWest has said that they recognise “digital solutions aren’t right for everyone or every situation” and urge vulnerable customers to call the bank on 0800 051 4175 if they are concerned about the upcoming changes.

The bank is contacting these vulnerable groups, such as the elderly, to “ensure they can continue to bank with [them] in the way which suits them best”.

A spokesperson said: “We take our responsibility seriously to support the people who face challenges in moving online, so we are investing to provide them with support and alternatives that work for them.”

“When we close branches we have to make sure that no one is left behind,” the spokesperson added.

A new postal cash delivery and Companion Card service has been rolled out nationwide.

The closures, along with the cuts to Post Office branches, will leave a “huge gap” in communities, particularly in rural areas. Carers and the elderly are expected to be hit hardest.

The number of jobs affected by the closures is unknown but NatWest have said staff will be redeployed if they can be.

The bank said: “For the small number of colleagues placed at risk as a result of this announcement, we will seek to manage any redundancies on a voluntary basis, and also explore where possible, redeployment opportunities.”

NatWest cut roles in 2020, when 550 employees had their roles terminated when a London office was closed.

The Regents House office in London, which had space for 2,500 employees in one of the bank’s biggest tech hubs, was also shut down,
