Sophie Monk’s former Bardot costar Belinda Chapple in new TV series about fictional girl group

Belinda Chapple is set to expose the inner workings of the music industry as the producer of a new TV series, Paper Dolls.

The show will document the rise of a fictional, fabricated pop group called Indigo – and given their explosive time in Bardot, art can emulate life.

Speaking to Stellar Magazine, the 47-year-old said the show was “both serious and ambitious, while shining a light behind the scenes”. [world] of the music industry”.

Sophie Monk left Bardot in 2002 amid rumors of bitter feuds in the band, and Belinda admits the band imploded dramatically.

“Bardot was buried, as we all know, very suddenly,” she told the magazine, and said it’s a different world for musicians these days.

“I think it’s wonderful that women feel empowered to have more voices now. Having been in the industry for so long, it’s incredibly exciting to see the shift in focus, with the #MeToo movement, for example,” she said.

Although the series may be fictional, there are several plot parallels to Belinda’s time at Bardot.

Indigo has five members, like Bardot, and they were made into a reality show, just like Bardot, who shot to fame on Channel 7’s Popstars series in 1999.

Paper Dolls also features a character described as an “extra ambitious member” who tears the group apart.

Sophie left Bardot in 2002 to pursue a solo music career, before heading to Hollywood where she landed work on the hit show Entourage, as well as films such as Adam Sandler’s Click.

Ainslie Clouston, who is the creator of the series, said of the series, “We are thrilled to bring the very exciting story of Paper Dolls to life. We can’t wait to unleash the glitz, grit and all that Y2K pop is famous for on screens.

Filming on the Paper Dolls will begin in Sydney later this year, with the series due to hit TV screens in 2023 on Channel Ten and Paramount+.

Bardot, made up of members Katie Underwood, Sally Polihronas, Sophie Monk, Tiffani Wood and Belinda Chapple, were the biggest girl group in Australia after forming on Popstars in 1999.

Despite success with hit singles such as Poison, the band fell apart after just a few years and disbanded in early 2002.

Former members Katie Underwood and Belinda Chapple have both denied claims by the band’s former manager David Caplice that ‘infighting’ led to the breakup.

“I thought that was quite interesting, because I found that to be completely in conflict with my experience,” Belinda told News Corp.

Belinda acknowledged that sometimes the singers were stressed due to their commitments to the band, but said, “As far as the infighting between us girls…that’s just not true.”

Katie added that women in the music industry should be ‘smiles and rainbows’ all the time, while men are allowed to have mood swings.

“Now, are these same managers applying the same things to the proliferation of boy bands? ” she says.

Bardot was supposed to reunite in 2020, minus Sophie Monk, but that ultimately didn’t happen.

Katie explained that it was difficult because “everyone is at different stages of their life” and has families and other commitments.

However, she told Stellar this week, “we’re looking at playing together again and we’ll see where that takes us.”

Also in 2020, former manager David Caplice claimed Bardot split following an “explosive” backstage outburst before their Mardi Gras performance in 2002.

The official told News Corp at the time that things had become “confrontational.”

“I remember the girls getting very antagonistic towards the end, when the urge and the infighting was out of control,” he said.

“This explosive meeting was the fatal blow for the group. Bardot could have been the greatest girl group in the world”.
