Prime Minister Scott Morrison will address the media from the Commonwealth Parliamentary Offices at 12.45pm AEDT.
He is expected to reveal the results of a meeting between the National Security Committee of Cabinet which was called this morning after Russian troops were ordered into rebel-held areas of eastern Ukraine.
A senior US government official in Washington said Australia would be imposing sanctions, following the US, Britain, Canada, Japan and the European Union.
