Ralf Rangnick opens up on alleged Erling Haaland transfer clause in his Man Utd contract

Ralf Rangnick has laughed off the suggestion that he will receive a bonus if Manchester United sign Erling Haaland.

It’s been reported that the new interim boss has a clause in his contract that means he will earn a £10m windfall if the Red Devils manage to secure the Borussia Dortmund striker’s services.

United have been widely linked with the Norwegian who will be a man in demand next summer with clubs able to trigger his £63million release clause.

It’s claimed that Old Trafford chiefs hope the arrival of Rangnick will give them the edge in the race for Haaland as Manchester City and Real Madrid provide stiff competition.

Rangnick has a close relationship with Haaland’s father, former Leeds and Man City midfielder Alf-Inge.

The former RB Leipzig boss was also sporting director at RB Salzburg when Haaland came to prominence before he was sold to Dortmund for £18m at the start of 2020.

But Rangnick poured cold water on any potential move for Haaland, while light-heartedly dismissing the report that said he would be in line for a £10m bonus if he does make the switch to Old Trafford.

He said: “£10m for Haaland, £10m for Kylian Mbappé, £10m for Lewandowski, and £10m for Joshua Kimmich… Obviously, it’s nonsense. There’s no clause in my contract.

“I know what kind of player he [ Erling Haaland ] is — the whole world has realised how good the player is. The offensive players we have here, we have so many top players in the offensive department that we don’t need to speak about any other player.”

Rangnick also played down claims that he will have a £100m budget at his disposal in the upcoming window as he warned that January is a notoriously hard period to do business in.

He added: “We haven’t spoken about new players, it’s not the time to think about new players. We have to get to know the players we have currently: the squad is definitely not too small.

“Maybe after Christmas, there will be a time to talk about possible transfers in the winter. In my experience, winter is not the time for sustainable transfers. It will be difficult in the winter.”
