People urged not to travel as ‘skeleton service’ runs from 7.30am and 6.30pm


A skeleton passenger service is poised to go into effect on the railways, running between the hours of 7.30am and 6.30pm.

Swathes of the country will have no rail service at all as non-critical lines are closed, with no passenger services running to Penzance, Canterbury, Bournemouth, Hull, Swansea, Holyhead, Hastings, Chester or Blackpool.

The last trains from London to Manchester and Birmingham will depart in the early afternoon, with what service there is likely to be sporadic and overcrowded.

24-hour walkouts by Network Rail signallers and workers from 13 train operating companies are set for Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday (June 21, 23 and 25), crippling the rail service.

Network Rail has warned that “around half of Britain’s rail network will be open on strike days”, with a “very limited service” running on open lines from 7.30am to 6.30pm.

A strike on Tuesday will also close the London Underground, the London Overground, the Elizabeth Line and Croydon trams for the day.

On Wednesday, Friday and Sunday (June 22, 24 and 26) the whole network will reopen, but passengers “should also expect disruption” on these days as there is not enough time between the strike days to “fully recover to a normal service”.

Some train companies are implementing reduced services from Monday ahead of the strike action.

Passengers are urged to plan ahead, check before they travel, to expect disruption and only travel if necessary.

Among the stations that will stay open is the usually-quiet Castle Cary in Somerset, which will still be served to allow thousands of festival-goers to travel to the Glastonbury festival.

Andrew Haines, Network Rail chief executive, said: “We, and our train operating colleagues, are gearing up to run the best service we can for passengers and freight users next week despite the actions of the RMT.”
