While turning at high speed on the way to the crash, the male officer lost control of the police car and crashed head-on into the wall of an apartment building on the corner of Hollywood Avenue and Ebley Street.
He suffered a minor head injury and was believed to have briefly lost consciousness before being helped out of the car and taken to hospital.
The female officer in the passenger seat appeared uninjured but was checked over by paramedics.
The police car has now been towed from the scene.
Despite damage to the exterior of the brick building, there was no structural damage, meaning residents could stay in their homes.
The Crash Investigation Unit have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the earlier single-car fatality.
The sole occupant of the vehicle was a 76-year-old woman, who is yet to be formally identified. She was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics, however, she died at the scene.
Police are appealing for anyone with information or dashcam footage to come forward and contact police immediately.
