Crowds expressed their jubilation on Tuesday night as England’s Lionesses made it through to the final of Euro 2022.
The official fan zone in Trafalgar Square erupted as goals from Beth Mead, Lucy Bronze, Alessia Russo and Fran Kirby cemented England’s 4-0 victory, securing their place in the final at Wembley on Sunday, where they will face either Germany or France.
Claudia Bruce, 24, from Leicester, said the victory was “huge”, adding that “women’s football has never been more supported”.
Jamie Ferreday, 27, from Chesterfield, said: “I think it’s the best England win in a century to be honest.
“I think it’s genuinely coming home. We beat Sweden – the best team in the tournament. Who have we got to fear now?
“I didn’t think it would be this good. England normally make us sweat.”
Ali Parkin, 19, from Sheffield, said it was all just too much.
“I can’t cope,” Ms Parkin said. “I thought we’d win, but maybe by a single goal in extra time – but not this. I cannot believe it.”
The biggest cheers of the night were heard after Alessia Russo scored England’s third goal of the evening.
Daisy Baker, 27, who lives in Essex, came to London to watch with friends.
She said that Russo was her “favourite player” and that she was “really happy for her”.
“She is a really incredible player and it’s nice to see her get a goal in the semi-final… as a woman myself it’s nice to see people coming behind a team that has done so well.
“They’ve done really well here – the crowd management is really good – they’ve thought about everything. I’ve been pleasantly surprised.”
Alice Potts, 24, from Leicester, added: “Russo’s backheel goal was phenomenal.”
Sam Duce, 24, who lives in London and works in telecoms, said: “It was great to see some long overdue support for the women’s team.”
Support for the Lionesses came from across the country, with Prime Minister Boris Johnson tweeting: “On to Wembley! A fantastic result for Captain @leahcwilliamson and the @Lionesses tonight against Sweden. Come on England, bring it home.”
Prince William, who is the FA’s president, tweeted: “Congratulations @Lionesses on making it to the #WEURO2022 final on Sunday. The entire country is so proud of everything you’re achieving. We believe in you and will be with you all the way!”
Keir Starmer wrote: “Incredible match! The @Lionesses are through to the #WEURO2022 final! #ItsComingHome”
