Georginio Wijnaldum compares PSG project to Liverpool and insists he’s not ‘unhappy’

Georginio Wijnaldum has compared Paris Saint-Germain’s current side to the one he first joined at Liverpool back in 2016 while also insisting he is happy in France.

The Netherlands international made the switch to the Ligue 1 giants last summer after seeing out the expiration of his Reds contract, ensuring Mauricio Pochettino’s side were not forced to pay any kind of transfer fee.

PSG currently sit top of Ligue 1 and boast a 13 point advantage over their nearest title rivals Marseille.

Fresh from beating Spanish giants Real Madrid in the first-leg of their Champions League last-16 clash, Wijnaldum has discussed the level of expectation placed on the shoulders of his new side.

“It takes time to form a good team, you have to get to know each other. Given the resources at the club, everyone expects us to win everything but that’s not how it works,” he revealed.

“I can speak from experience because I joined a team under construction when I signed for Liverpool.”

Wijnaldum spent five years at Anfield and won one Premier League and one Champions League title each in the process.

However, things have not gone exactly to plan for the 31-year-old who really struggled to get to grips with things at the beginning of his time in Paris.

Initially Wijnaldum was playing at least 70 minutes every league game, yet his poor form led to a reduced role from late August until just before the festive period.

After playing the full 90 away at Stade Brestois on August 20, Wijnaldum completed just three times for the rest of the Calendar year.

A recent interview appeared to suggest that the former Newcastle midfielder was unhappy with the situation he found himself in at the Parc Des Princes, but he has since set the record straight with the official PSG magazine.

“The fact is, when I did this interview, I was just a little disappointed with the way things were going in sporting terms at the start of the season, on a personal level.

“During this period many thought that I wasn’t happy at the club when I actually was.”

Winjaldum went on to explain how any unhappiness he may have been feeling purely stemmed from a lack of game-time rather than any ill-feeling towards those making decisions above him.

“I was simply not happy with the playing time that I was being given at that time. A journalist asked me: ‘Are you satisfied with your playing time?’ No, I wasn’t.

“I think any player who spends more time sitting on a bench than on the pitch won’t be fulfilled by that situation.

“The media interpreted my words by saying that I wasn’t happy at PSG, which was absolutely not the case.”
