Dakota will play Jane Austen’s heroine Anne Elliot in the adaptation of the novel of the same name, and the teaser has already garnered some backlash.
One Janeite wrote: “Looks like they’ve taken out the most interesting part of the Jane Austin stories: the social contexts of the time and the women forced to navigate them.
‘It seems like a modern teen drama with 18th century attire. No thanks.’
The novel was published in 1818, six months after the author’s death at the age of 41. The last Austen-inspired film to piss off fans in this way was 1999’s Mansfield Park.
