Cringe-worthy injury doesn’t stop ‘Naked and Afraid’ contestant from completing challenge

Usually fishing trips are fun, but this was not the case for a survivalist on Sunday. On just the second day of the 21-day challenge in the South African bush, Cheeny, 31, from Maine, received a barbed hook driven deep into his thumb.

Cheeny served as a survival, evasion, resistance, and evasion (SERE) specialist in the Air Force for eight years. The Air Force says “these experts know how to survive in the most remote and hostile environments on the planet.” Needless to say, she is extremely tough.

Although she managed the pain of the injury, she was unable to remove the barbed hook without the help of a doctor.

“The only option I had was to cut the hook itself and run the whole hook through the rest of his thumb,” the doctor said.

In what appeared to be an extremely painful procedure, the doctor slowly forced the hook through Cheeny’s thumb and out.

While the whole incident made some viewers cringe, Cheeny didn’t seem to get any worse after removing the hook. Not only that, but she also completed the 21-day challenge.

“I’m so happy right now,” she said after finishing. “I did this for the SERE community and I hope they are proud of it. Honestly, I’m super grateful for this whole experience. But I’m also very happy that it’s over.

Naked and scared airs Sundays at 8 p.m. on Discovery.
