Adam Mosseri addresses user complaints saying new changes are ‘not yet good’


The man in charge of social media giant Instagram has been forced to address complaints from users about a host of dramatic changes to the platform.

And for those who don’t like the new video-rich Instagram environment, it’s not good news.

Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri addressed the changes on Tuesday night in an attempt to help users understand the direction the business and social media platform are taking.

In the three-minute video, Mosseri admitted there had been a lot of discussion about changes some or all users are seeing on the platform, and attempted to address them directly.

Mosseri referred to the “full-screen experience” some users may have seen.

“A more full-screen experience, not only for videos but for photos, might be a more fun, engaging experience,” he said.

He also levelled with users in a blow to the developers of that experience.

“I also wanna be clear,” he said.

“It’s not yet good, and we’re gonna have to get it to a good place if we’re gonna ship it to the rest of the Instagram community.”

Mosseri then went on to address the real elephant in the room: concerns Instagram was shifting to video, away from its core original purpose as a photo-sharing service.

Mosseri insisted the platform would continue to support photos, describing them as “part of our heritage”.

“You know, I love photos. I know a lot of you out there love photos too,” he said.

“That said, I need to be honest. I do believe that more and more of Instagram is gonna become video over time.

“We see this, even if we change nothing, we see this. Even if you just look at chronological feed, if you look at what people share on Instagram, that’s shifting more and more to videos over time.

“If you look at what people like and consume and view on Instagram, that’s also shifting more and more to video over time, even when we stop changing anything. So we’re gonna have to lean into that shift while continuing to support photos.”

The reality is Instagram, owned by Facebook parent company Meta, is in fact suffering from its biggest competitive moment ever.

TikTok has taken over the attention of a vast number of users, growing at a faster rate than any social media platform in history — and it’s all video.

Instagram’s shift to video, along with the “full-screen experience” is entirely aimed at capturing the TikTok audience.

Mosseri didn’t address the threat from his social network’s main rival.

A third problem exists among the user community on Instagram. It has moved from being a place where you see photos from people you choose to follow, to being one where Instagram pushes new accounts and content into your feed without asking. It calls these recommendations.

Instagram’s boss addressed that, describing recommendations as a way to “help you discover new and interesting things on Instagram that you may not know even exist”.

“Now, if you’re seeing things in your feed that are recommendations that you’re not interested in, that means that we’re doing a bad job ranking and we need to improve,” he said.

Mosseri signed off with a commitment to “creators” on the platform and a reassurance “we’re gonna stay committed to supporting photos”.

But many detractors were far from satisfied with the explanation.

Facebook’s rebrand to Meta was about moving away from the tags and labels Facebook carried from many years of controversy, and setting a course for a future we can’t yet see in the Metaverse.

But the real problem for Meta is maintaining its user base and user activity in the face of a rapid growth in users and revenue from TikTok.
